ACBU and Common Ground Sponsor “Speak Like a Girl” Event

ACBU and Common Ground – the LGBT+ group on campus – co-sponsored “Speak Like a Girl” on Sunday, March 6 in the Marty Theatre. Olivia Gatwood and Megan Falley are currently touring the country to spread the word about feminism using spoken word.

The event featured slam poetry written by the two young women regarding issues such as rape culture, the feminist movement, inequality in the workplace, and other problems women are facing today. Some of the poems were based off of personal experience, while others were inspired by the experiences of other women, responses to movie or video game characters, as well as news stories covering rape and sexual assault on college campuses. Between poems, the women stopped to take polls from the audience about catcalling, “the friendzone”, etc. “Speak Like a Girl” is currently touring the nation, performing on college campuses in hopes to bring light to rape culture.

Between Olivia and Megan, there are several published books of poetry, some of which they performed that night and others that were not; they were on sale as well as t-shirts. The profits made from those sales went directly to the group to help continue their nationwide tour.
