{"id":3425,"date":"2024-10-01T20:48:05","date_gmt":"2024-10-02T01:48:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/?p=3425"},"modified":"2024-10-01T20:48:05","modified_gmt":"2024-10-02T01:48:05","slug":"brother-outsider-the-story-of-bayard-rustins-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/2024\/10\/01\/brother-outsider-the-story-of-bayard-rustins-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Brother Outsider: The Story of Bayard Rustin\u2019s Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The life events of Bayard Rustin continue to impact communities and citizens everywhere<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On August 23, 2024, the Dirksen Congressional Center collaborated with the Peoria Riverfront Museum to host an event showcasing the documentary <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brother Outsider<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and a panel discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bayard Rustin was a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Movement, advocating for civil rights, nonviolence, and LGBTQ+ rights. His story went untold for too long.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rustin worked closely with leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., notably organizing the March on Washington, where he stood by King during his iconic speech. He organized Freedom Rides, founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and led the group known as \u201cIn Friendship,\u201d among other efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rustins lifelong partner, Walter Naegle, reflected on the reasons Rustin\u2019s story remained untold for so long, stating \u201cone of the main reasons Bayard\u2019s story went under the radar for so long was because he was a liability.\u201d Raised as a Quaker, Rustin was taught the value of being true to himself, regardless of the consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite facing numerous challenges, including opposition and arrest, Rustin stood firm and unapologetic in his beliefs. He was unwavering in his commitment to justice and equality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When asked why he chose to direct a documentary about Rustin, Bennett Singer explained. \u201cRustin wasn&#8217;t forgotten from history, he was expunged. As a gay man who wasn\u2019t comfortable being out, I felt a magnetic pull to learn more about Rustin. It\u2019s a timeless and timely story.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Singer went on to discuss how leaders in today\u2019s society are praised for going out of the box and standing up for what they believe, even if it is outside of the norm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">4th District Council Member, Andre Allen, connected Rustin\u2019s story to the Peoria community stating, \u201cWe have come a long way [in regards to the Civil Rights Movement], but still have much more to learn and do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Dirksen Congressional Center screened this documentary as part of the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. The goal was to shed light onto Bayard Rustin\u2019s impactful story and honor the ongoing legacy of the Civil Rights Movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tiffany White, Executive Director of the Dirksen Congressional Center, facilitated the event. \u201dMy main goal everyday is to tell stories and make connections.
