Since there is such a multitude of organizations some may slip through the cracks. Unfortunately, one of these organizations is Bradley University Democrats. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bradley University Democrats is a student-run political organization that focuses on campaigning for Democratic candidates at the federal, state, and local levels through advancing Democratic causes and voter registration efforts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I first heard about this organization in 2017 when I was an incoming freshman at the yearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bradley.edu\/campuslife\/sao\/events\/welcome-week\/\">Activities Fair<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Bradley University Democrats immediately stood out to me because of how naturally they interacted with their members.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The president at the time was casually talking about an upcoming guest speaker for the organization with a group of students. Upon signing their new member sheet I was immediately added to the bi-monthly email newsletter by the organization secretary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since it has now been three years since I was a freshman I decided to reach out to standing president Priscilla Calder\u00f3n, 21, and junior member Lauren Bacon, 20, to get a sense of the organization today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I sat down with Priscilla in the Business and Engineering Convergence Center to get a feel for her experience as an executive member. This all changed after she joined Bradley University Democrats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Priscilla was first introduced to Bradley University Democrats through a President\u2019s Day event in 2018. From here she was hooked and had to attend a meeting. The meetings were <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>\u201ceasy-going\u2026 and focused on political discussions\u201d.<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Priscilla describes the meetings as orientated around student comments, <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201ca sharing place\u201d. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Luckily for Priscilla, 2019 was an election year for the organization. With her experience as an organization member and connections formed as a new Political Science major, she was a perfect fit for the organization President and has held this position for three years. During these three years, Priscilla has recruited several new members, including Lauren Bacon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2714\" style=\"width: 209px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/files\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-24-at-2.54.40-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2714\" class=\"wp-image-2714\" src=\"http:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/files\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-24-at-2.54.40-PM-229x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2714\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bradley University Democrats member Lauren Bacon<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lauren met with me in the Global Communication Center study room to share her story of being a Bradley University Democrats member. Like me, Lauren first heard of Bradley University Democrats through the Fall Activities Fair. Lauren expresses the importance of sharing your voice as a Bradley student, in a quote saying <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis is a place of education where we have the resources to form education opinions to share with the community around us\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Through this organization, Lauren has formed connections within and outside of Bradley University. Utilizing the resources available within Bradley University Democrats, Lauren was able to secure an internship with a candidate for Peoria\u2019s 2nd District Peter Kobak. Lauren\u2019s internship taught her skills regarding <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201clocal government, local elections, and community organizing\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pjstar.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2021\/02\/23\/peoria-primary-election-2021-latest-peorias-2021-city-primary-election\/4495825001\/\">The 2nd District election<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will take place on April 6, 2021.
