{"id":2370,"date":"2019-10-17T14:48:19","date_gmt":"2019-10-17T19:48:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/?p=2370"},"modified":"2019-10-17T14:48:19","modified_gmt":"2019-10-17T19:48:19","slug":"award-winning%e2%80%8b-tv-critic-maureen-ryan-speaks-to-bradley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/2019\/10\/17\/award-winning%e2%80%8b-tv-critic-maureen-ryan-speaks-to-bradley\/","title":{"rendered":"Award-Winning\u200b TV Critic Maureen Ryan Speaks to Bradley"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On Tuesday, October 8th at 7 p.m. award winning TV critic <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/author\/maureen-ryan\/\">Maureen Ryan <\/a>took the stage during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bradley.edu\/academic\/colleges\/cfa\/\">Communication Department<\/a>\u2019s annual Robison Lecture at the Michel Student Center Ballroom.&nbsp; Ryan, a former chief television critic at <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\">Variety<\/a>, took the stage Tuesday night, delivering her lecture; \u201cThe Myths of Hollywood: Why Dissecting Them Matters, Especially If You Love What Hollywood Makes\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_0141-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_0141-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_0141-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_0141-1-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>The Michel Student Center Ballroom was filled with students eager to hear Ryan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> At the beginning of the lecture, Ryan was introduced by Bradley professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bradley.edu\/academic\/departments\/com\/faculty\/profile.dot?id=b7789eb2-f217-4a47-b21d-69fa3f3d5b35\">Sara Netzley<\/a>, who briefly described Ryan&#8217;s accomplishments as well as expressed gratitude for coming to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bradley.edu\">Bradley University.<\/a>\u00a0 When questioned about her reaction to Ryan\u2019s lecture, Netzley again expressed her excitement saying, \u201cI was extremely pleased to have such a talented television writer speaking on campus about timely topics. She speaks about Hollywood affectionately but also critically, so I think she&#8217;s a great person to talk about the challenges facing some of the more toxic aspects that have come to light recently&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_0146-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_0146-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_0146-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_0146-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Bradley University Communications Professor Sara Netzley welcomes crowd and introduces Maureen Ryan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\tDuring Ryan\u2019s lecture, she discussed some of the underlying problems associated with Hollywood.&nbsp; Depicting her thoughts of Hollywood through \u201cmyths\u201d of what people actually expect of the people that run Hollywood.&nbsp; One myth she mentioned was the overarching belief that producers and executives in Hollywood bring about social change through their works, indicating that most of the time this influence of social change is usually exaggerated. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Another myth Ryan discussed was people\u2019s general acceptance that Hollywood\u2019s top producers and directors are also the most talented and intelligent, claiming that this is false and that some of the most talented people in Hollywood are not necessarily the most \u201csuccessful ones\u201d; mentioning most of the highest caliber acting and film awards are nearly always won by whites, which just cannot accurately depict the best and most talented people in the film industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_0149-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_0149-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_0149-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/com.bradley.edu\/newslab\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_0149-1-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Maureen Ryan speaks to the audience about the many myths about Hollywood.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> Students and faculty in attendance seemed to thoroughly enjoy Ryan\u2019s lecture, as many laughs were shared among Ryan and the crowd.\u00a0 Junior Sheridan Hurtig found Ryan\u2019s lecture to be quite eye-opening, saying \u201cIt was really interesting to hear about a world that was completely different than to what we (students at a private university in Peoria) are used to.\u00a0 Also, to hear that ultimately, while we live in completely separate worlds, that those people aren\u2019t much different from us&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Students typically had the same reaction to Ryan\u2019s lecture, for Senior Joshua Hansen he feels as if he has a new perspective on Hollywood after viewing the lecture.\u00a0 Stating that he, \u201cReally feels like the myths she mentioned not only apply to just Hollywood but in real life.\u00a0 A lot of times the same concepts can happen in real life.\u00a0 I think Ryan really pointed out how important it view these people associated with the same business very intricately because it will reveal the true colors of whomever you\u2019re analyzing\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Overall,&nbsp;
