Bradley tuition continues to increase

Tuition is currently expected to rise once again at Bradley University after its department of Student Financial Services released payment information for the 2015-2016 academic year on its website.

The fees posted on the website are not yet official, as the university’s Board of Trustees must vote to finalize them. If approved, Bradley tuition will rise to $31,110, which is a one percent increase from the 2014-2015 price of $30,844.

In a 2014 interview with WEEK-TV, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs David Glassman attributed the change in costs, as well as $7 million in budget cuts that Bradley administered for the school year, to low numbers in student enrollment.

“We had known a little bit before that [enrollment] was a bit lower than what we anticipated,” Glassman said. “We have adjusted and have a balanced budget.”

Steadily rising tuition is not a trend that’s only happening at Bradley, but it is also occurring at many other institutions across the country. According to the U.S. Department of Education, the national average percent change in college costs in America currently sits at 13 percent for public, four-year universities and 11 percent for private, four-year universities.

As for where Bradley matches up with other schools in Illinois, Niche.com, a college ranking website, named Bradley the tenth most expensive university in the state. Bradley student Paul King believes that unless the enrollment situation improves for the school in the near future, Bradley will only continue to make its inglorious rise through the ranks.

“It makes sense to me that if enrollment does not increase, then [Bradley] would probably need to increase tuition, or [they] would probably need to increase some costs for the students that are enrolled in the school at the time,” King said. “So I would think it would move toward being more expensive.”
