This past Friday, the ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. brought a little soul back to Bradley’s campus with their “soul food” cook out in order to help give back to the community.
Bradley University’s Garret Center hosted the ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. for a friendly-faced cook out Friday night. The cook out consisted of a buffet of homemade style soul foods such as, freshly made baked beans, fresh mashed potatoes, and of course delicious fried chicken and pulled pork. Groups of students gathered to enjoy the fresh buffet, but for the women of Sigma Gamma Rho, the cook off meant more to them than having good tasting food.
The sorority women wanted to host a fundraiser during black history month to commemorate the work and accomplishments of their organization. Their goal is to enhance the life and quality of lives within the community. With the soul food cook off, the women wanted to raise money in order to give back in order to help make the community a better place. A portion of the cook off proceeds will be given to the Hattie McDaniel Cancer and Health Awareness Program, one of the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.’s national programs that are committed to providing education and active support within the cancer society. The program works to help raise money to educate and support research for early detection and research on prevention for several different types of cancers such as breast, prostate, colon and ovarian and so much more. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. also works with other corporations and companies that share similar goals and morals such as March of Dimes, Africare, and the National Urban League that all work to give back to the co
I was able to sit down and talk with member, and senior marketing major Verita Richardson to hear her thoughts and passion towards their organization and the different ways the organization continues to give back to the communities.
The importance of community service goes all the way back to when the organization was founded. Educators who were living through the struggle of the education system in the 1900s founded Sigma Gamma Rho, Inc. started the group believing that self-respect, knowledge and discipline would help the individuals give back to the community. The history of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is what the women in the organization base their lives off of today.
The women of Sigma Gamma Rho, Inc. must apply and be accepted into the organization through graduated members. With over 85,000 plus members today, the organization continues to grow and continues to give back to the communities around them.
