Market on Moss

In the past couple of years, the city of Peoria has created a new tradition on Moss Avenue at the end of every summer.  Collaborating with local vendors and artists, Market on Moss is a French styled market for both locals and newcomers to enjoy.  A Peoria favorite, Market on Moss was first created in June 2012.  After great success, the city decided to make the market into an annual event. Ever since Market on Moss has attracted hundreds of attendees every summer for them to enjoy handmade goods, antiques, and french cuisine.

One of the main attractions about the Market on Moss are the local Peoria vendors. Artists, chefs, and local businesses all come together and bring their handiwork for the visitors to enjoy. These Peoria businesses are sharing their talents with the market, while the market attendees are giving back to them by providing them with business.  Many of the attendees are supporters of this concept. “I love knowing that my money is going back to the vendors, so that they can continue making more great work” said attendee Amanda Christianson. Vendors such as vintage antique store The Rustic Junktion, originating from Morton, Illinois. Rustic Junktion sells flea market finds, along with antique furniture and other goods. Other Peoria stores represented were Katic Breads; selling Harvest bread, French bread and Ciabatta rolls. Zion Coffee is another local business that not only receives support from the Peoria community, but also they give back to the farmers where the coffee beans are grown. The Market on Moss not only helps to support local businesses, but also gives back to the community simultaneously.

As a visitor of this event, there are plenty of attractions to offer all within a somewhat small market.  When first entering the market, you immediately are greeted by tents set up by the vendors, each tent displaying the artist’s or businesses product.  As you tour the area, you get to see the variety of trinkets and items the market holds.  Filled with fall decorations, antiques, and furniture, the market contains something for everyone’s interests. When talking with attendee Lynn Obery, Lynn said her favorite part was “All of the french food! There are scones and crepes, and there are also these amazing ‘frites’ that are cooked in truffle oil and parmesan cheese. Plus I heard there’s going to be a wine sampling later”.  This taste of France adds to the culture of the event, and is a favorite amongst the visitors of the Market on Moss.

Market on Moss has blossomed into a very popular event for the Peoria community.  Occurring at the end of every summer, Market on Moss is a unique and fun way to celebrate the change of season. Though the market may only be in Peoria, Illinois, the Market on Moss creates a French experience for all who attend this annual event.
