In a time where the voice of Latinos matters the most in voting and the future of our nation as a whole, it’s important to know just how much of an impact they’re making on college campuses. Read on to see the numbers and stats.
In towns and universities with a predominately white population, it’s easy to assume that the neighboring ethnicities won’t be as large in number. But these institutions have fought hard to combat that, inciting new and innovative ways to bring in more students of color.
To make more sense of such a large number, this article will focus on Latino students coming into college campuses. In a report released by Ivy Coach, a college admissions assistance site, it was shown that even in prestigious Ivy League schools like Brown University and Harvard, their Latino populations are 45% and 11.4%, respectively.
Though Brown University is more known for its minority populace, this hasn’t stopped other universities from trying to draw in more minority numbers. From the perspective of the Midwest, there has been a spike of Latinos entering into the college experience, with Latinos aged 18-24 enrolling themselves in a two- or four-year college that has more than tripled in number since 1993. The Pew Research Center also reports that “in 2013, 2.2 million Hispanics were enrolled in college, up from 728,000 in 1993- a 201% increase.”
As time has gone on, these numbers have only increased, making Latinos the largest minority group on college campuses today. With over fifteen minority groups on Bradley University’s campus, there is hope for the future of a generation to grow throughout the Midwest and beyond, breaking barriers and bringing a voice to the voiceless.
Below, you will find two links proving these findings; one, a Google map of Sigma Lambda Gamma sororities growing across the Midwest, and another, a chart displaying a comparison of minorities within Bradley University’s campus:
