Debate over transgender bathroom access digs deeper

The controversy over transgender bathroom usage has taken America by storm. The idea of transgender men and women using the bathroom of their choice has public figures stepping out into the madness to get their two cents in.

Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson made his opinion available via internet, in tradition celebrity style. “Just because a man may ‘feel’ like a woman doesn’t mean he should be able to share a bathroom with my daughter, or yours. That used to be called common sense. Now it’s called bigoted”, he said.

Robertson isn’t the only one who sides with North Carolina’s HB2, a law that bans individuals from using public bathrooms that do not correspond with their biological sex as dictated by their birth certificates. This ban also denies cities the ability to pass anti-discrimination ordinances to protect transgender people. The law passed on March 23rd and the Obama administration announced on Monday that it is already suing the state.

What does this mean? The Justice Department can ultimately cut off important funding to North Carolina’s Department of Public Safety and the University of North Carolina. This isn’t the only money the state would be losing; in fact, music artists including Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas and Bruce Springsteen have cancelled tour dates there in the state due to concern.
