Today on campus we are focusing on a member of the jazz ensemble and a current student taking a Bradley music class. Giving a spotlight to students involved in the music program here will help us take a better look at what goes on here on the hilltop. Music classes may seem like an interest to many, and Bradley ensures students start off with a basis of knowledge and encourages students it’s never too late to start learning.

It’s a difficult time for students entering the music industry, due to the pandemic and outside factors that may prevent students in this area to grow. In order for students to excel in this path, opportunities must be open and readily available for them. Bradley University offers a helping hand to this population by offering a variety of music classes and encourages students to play their music in person.

“We get activities like we have to listen to certain songs and listening logs about what kind of instrument is playing, whether it’s woodwinds, brass, keyboard, or strings. It’s a lot of fun.” Senior Johannes said. “I took this class as an elective, and I’m enjoying it even more than I had anticipated.”

Being musically gifted is not a talent that everyone has or has the desire to have. It takes practice and self-discipline to ensure success. Bradley University offers many opportunities for students to be involved in this area. From being able to play in person, while following COVID regulations, Bradley University works hard to show their students they have options available here.

“My music experience here at Bradley is pretty fun, I’m in the jazz ensemble, so I learn how to play a lot of music by ear, which is the overall goal of the program. It’s relatively new to Bradley, yet it is expanding.” Sophomore Ray said. “Playing music by ear is essentially being able to play music just by listening to it, which is an exciting challenge but has been made easier by practice. I play trombone, and it’s nice being able to actually be welcomed to play on campus. I enjoy performing, and here we have that opportunity which means a lot, even if it’s just streamed online.

The strength of Bradley’s music program should not go unnoticed. Students are able to directly apply what they have learned in an in-person setting, demonstrating Bradley’s confidence in their students who have a love for music.
