News Story 2

Well, the Chicago Bears have done it again. Fans of the Monsters of the Midway will have to go another season without a premiere quarterback, and instead will have to settle for a below average player at the quarterback position.

During this offseason, there was a lot of speculation that the Bears could trade for and acquire the Seattle Seahawks super star quarterback Russell Wilson. This would have been a huge upgrade for the Bears, given over the last couple of years, the Bears quarterbacks have been Mitchell Trubisky, Nick Foles, and Jay Cutler, just to name a few. If the Bears had acquired Wilson this offseason, he would have immediately become the bears best quarterback of all time, and he wouldn’t have even played a game yet.

The Bears have always, and I mean always, had terrible luck/skill when it came to getting a franchise quarterback. The best quarterback the Bears ever had was Jim McManhon, and that was back in the 80’s! They also had Rex Grossman for a few years, but he wasn’t an all time great quarterback. Statistically speaking, Jay Cutler was the best quarterback the Bears ever had, and that sentence in and of itself is a problem.

What made the failure of acquiring Russell Wilson worse, was who the Bears picked up in exchange for him. After hyping up the idea of getting Wilson, we ended up getting Andy Dalton. Andy. Dalton. Who just had a not so great year with the Dallas Cowboys last year, and couldn’t even lead the Bengals to relevancy when he was on the team. To compare that to something non sports related, that’s like telling a kid you are going to get them a big cake for their birthday, and instead on their birthday you give them a cookie. To top that off, the Bears then proceeded to lose Mitch Trubisky to the Buffalo Bills. Although Mitch wasn’t the best quarterback in the league, if you talked to any football fan, it would be almost unanimous in deciding that Mitch is a better quarterback than Andy Dalton.

To put this into perspective, last season we saw just how ineffective a not so mobile quarterback will be behind the Bears offensive line, when Nick Foles took over the starting position in the middle of the season. In the seven starts that he had, he threw for ten touchdowns, and eight interceptions, and the team went two and five, and lost four straight before he got benched again.

Andy Dalton is just a younger, and slightly more athletic version of Nick Foles, whereas Mitch Trubisky was very athletic, and that was probably his best trait. So now, the Bears don’t have a quarterback with the ability to run, and an offensive line that is suspect at best. It is also very unlikely that the Bears will be able to draft a high quality quarterback due to the fact that they made the playoffs, so they don’t have a great pick, and they really can’t trade up in the draft to get someone. Not that Bears fans would trust that anyway, because the last time the Bears were in a position to get a great quarterback, they chose Trubisky over Deshawn Watson and Patrick Mahomes, who are currently considered two of the best quarterbacks in the league currently. Lets see if the Bears can make this work, although Bears fans aren’t holding their breaths.
