John Schweitzer holds the rank of Professor in the Department of Communication at Bradley University where he was department chairman from 1993 until 1999. Previously he taught at Texas Tech University for nine years where he was Director of Advertising/Public Relations and, later, director of Graduate Studies in the School of Mass Communications and Professor of Communication Studies.

Schweitzer spent the 1999-2000 academic year in Bulgaria as a Fulbright Scholar in the Faculty of Journalism, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and at the American University in Bulgaria. He has also lectured at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and at Hong Kong Baptist University.

Schweitzer was publisher of the Terre Haute (IN) Tribune-Star for three years and before earning his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, worked for the Charlotte Observer for several years. He also served as vice president of Belden Associates, a newspaper marketing research firm in Dallas, Texas where he also worked for Bozell-Jacobs advertising agency and owned his own market research company. While in Dallas he was an adjunct professor of Marketing at the University of Texas at Dallas.

In 1998, he was one of the authors of a successful $21,000 grant request to the Pew Civic Journalism Fund for a study of Peoria’s leadership that won a national award. He has also received grants from the Freedom Forum and the Voice of America among others. He has participated in workshops and seminars conducted by the Poynter Institute and the American Press Institute.

Author or co-author of more than 40 refereed journal articles, he has presented more than 50 invited and refereed research papers and addresses at conventions and professional meetings both at home and abroad. He has been a member of the editorial review board of the Newspaper Research Journal since its inception. He was editor of Southwestern Mass Communication Journal prior to joining the faculty of Bradley University.

Schweitzer and his wife have six daughters and 11 grandchildren.

American Press Institute’s “Journalism Educator’s Seminar” in Reston, VA  (October 6-11, 1985).  Selected to attend this seminar on competitive basis among all journalism and mass communications educators in the country.  Only 32 persons were selected to attend tuition-free.

Advertising Education Foundation/American Academy of Advertising “Visiting Professor” Program.  Selected as one of about 15 educators from around the country to spend eight weeks working in a national advertising agency.  Spent the summer of 1985 with Bozell & Jacobs in Dallas, Texas.
