Dr. Greg Pitts is an assistant professor holding a Bachelor of Arts in Prelaw/Communications and a Master of Speech Communication both from Auburn University. Pitts earned a doctorate in Communications from the University of Tennessee. Pitts is a member of the Broadcast Education Association, and served in the leadership of the Management and Sales Division. He is also a member of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. He has presented peer-reviewed research at both organizations' conferences. Since 1996, he has worked with the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) Internship Co-ordination Team and attends the annual NATPE Conference. Earlier in his career, he oversaw the startup of a college-owned commercial radio station. He managed the station and sold advertising time, worked on-air and handled engineering assignments. Pitts received a prestigious Fulbright Fellowship for Teaching and Research in 1997 and spent six months teaching and researching at the University of Zambia and working with government and private media organizations in Zambia. His international teaching and consulting also includes work in Nigeria and Bulgaria. He is co-author of The Radio Broadcasting Industry (Allyn & Bacon, 2001). The author of "Radio Broadcasting" in Communication Technology Update, (Focal Press, 2000). He has published additional research in Communication Law and Policy, Southwestern Mass Communication Journal, Journal of Radio Studies, Ecquid Novi: Journal for Journalism in Southern Africa and Feedback.

Media Consultant in media management and sales, International Broadcast Bureau/Voice of America, U.S. Department of State, Tirana, Albania, May 24-28 and March 23-29, 2006. Continuing consultation since November 2004 to improve the operation and profit of Vizion+ Television.  Consultation has focused on the use of research data to more effectively “tell” the station’s viewership story to advertising clients, creation of sales support documents for account executives, and streamlining management practices—through creation of job descriptions and personnel evaluation procedures.

Fulbright Lecturer and Researcher, University of Montenegro, Podgorica, Montenegro (February-May 2006).  Lecturer to media students and media industry professionals in mass communication topics.  Also consulted with municipal television stations through the Montenegro Media Institute to offer idea to improve the station’s operations and sales/marketing initiatives.

Media Consultant in media management and sales, International Broadcast Bureau/Voice of America, U.S. Department of State, Tirana, Albania, November 11-23, 2005. Return consulting visit.  Worked with station management to create a television viewer survey to assess television viewing and audience attitudes about television stations in Albania and station programming.  Led a team of 10 data collectors in telephone and personal interview data collection of more than 500 questionnaires.  Input data and analyzed with SPSS and presented Vision+ Television management with survey results.

Program and Faculty Development Grant Program.  Coordinate selection of 35-40 student interns and 28-30 academic Faculty Fellowship recipients.  These two groups attend the annual NATPE Conference.  Select student interns, screen faculty participants, and arrange and schedule high-level media industry leaders for faculty seminar sessions.  Also screen applicants for the NATPE Faculty Development Grant   program.  Place grant winners at desired stations or media firms.

Capital Grant:  Cosmos Broadcasting/The Liberty Corporation, Greenville, South Carolina, 1992. Grant of $5,300 for purchase of a satellite dish to receive CNN Newsource services.

Software Grant:  TAPSCAN, Incorporated, Birmingham, Alabama, 1993-1996. Tapscan/Qualitap/Multimedia/Continuity Director ratings analysis and sales presentation software, valued at $36,000 for the three year term of the grant.  

Research Grant:  National Association of Broadcasters, Washington, D.C., 1991-1992.  NAB Research Grant of $2,678 for An Investigation of AM Station Owners' and Managers' Attitudes Regarding AM Improvement. This project was also the subject of my doctoral dissertation.

KKLC-AM, Application for license transfer, 1985.  Prepared for Louisiana College for submission to the Federal Communications Commission, including equipment and engineering calculations and expense and revenue projections.

Lee County Student Listenership Surveys, 1980-1981, 1981-1982 and 1982-1983.  Reports to the management of WEGL-FM and the Auburn University Board of Communications.

WEGL-FM, Application for license renewal, 1981.  Prepared for Auburn University for submission to the Federal Communications Commission, including programming reports and ascertainment.
